Computer Recommendations

Hardware Specifications

We are often asked to recommend what kinds of computers that incoming Engineering students should buy. Since University of Maryland students are eligible to purchase Dell and Apple computers at a discount through the Academic Computers for Terps program.  We recommend that Engineering students, especially off campus, purchase higher-end laptop hardware with the following specifications:

  • Intel® Core™ i5 or i7 processor
  • 16 GB RAM or higher
  • 500 GB Hard Drive or higher
  • Large External Monitor

Software

Because we make many of your required computer software packages available through our Virtual Computer Lab, we advise delaying your software purchasing until you begin classes and discover which software is required by your major. Many software packages including those from Microsoft, Adobe, and Mathworks are available through the Terpware service.  Visit our campus's Terrapin Technology Store in the Stamp Student Union for direct access to the latest hardware..

Support

Academic Computers for Terps will provide you with basic, on-site support for computers purchased through their program.
